Step 6 - Leather Jacket
Once again go to the layer with the flat colour for the jacket on it and lock the transparency.
Using a colour slightly darker than flat colour define the collar and the seams because these have been lost in the flat colour. If you wish to, lower the transparency a little and use your sketch as a guide.
Set your brush back to airbrush hard round brush size 2 Opacity and Flow 50 - 70%. Using the same colour start to define the shadows like we did with the skirt.
Again, use a slightly darker shade (not yet black) to define the folds a little more. Under the collar will be quite a large casting shadow so you can go quite dark there.
Brush in some highlights in a lighter grey.
Now drop the brush size to 1 and using black define all the remaining shadows, sharpen up any folds and really go to town with the shadows.
Because we don’t want it to go too grey we will only be adding one set of additional highlights.
Leather is a shiny material so to add this illusion we’re going to use a much lighter grey and only add small dots of colour in areas. Don’t add too much just follow where the light would directly reflect off of.
Zoom out, check your shading is in the right place and that everything looks ok before we go any further. If you’re not happy with an area, paint over it again in your midtone and start again on that area, it’s not crime to have to re-shade things, I do it a lot. If you’re not happy now, you won’t be happy at the end.
Step 7 - Finishing off the Jacket
Create a new layer above the jacket and get a light grey/silvery colour. This is the colour we will be using on all the zips and poppers.
Using a 1px thick brush with opacity 100% and flow around 80%
draw in the zip following the edge of the jacket. Don’t worry if it goes over, we can fix this later. Add a thicker mark at the top and bottom of the zip where the end, and where the zip toggle would be at the top of the closed part of the zip. Allow your zip to curve round fold by adding a slight wobble in the line, here there is only a 1 px variation so you don’t need such a big wobble to indicate a fold. You can also add a dot on the collar to indicate a popper and add studs by dotting around the jacket to make it look more rock if you wish to.
Go back to layer 4 and select outside the jacket. Then move back to your zip layer and press delete, all parts outside the jacket should disappear. Remove the selection.
Zoom out of your doll. Right now the zip appears to stand out a lot against the backing jacket. To make the zip blend in more, lower the opacity till you’re happy with the way the zip blends in.
Step 7.5 - Mid Doll Edits
As I’m zoomed out looking at the doll I have decided that the plaid looks a bit wonky, so I’m going to delete the plaid layer and redo it. (Back to step 5) I also decided the white looked too bright so I added a green stripe instead. There we go, much better. I can’t stress this point enough, if you think something looks dead wrong, it’s never too late to change it. That’s what layers are for so use them!
